After learning about traditional British savoury dishes last week, we took a look at sweet dishes in our second DT lesson! When considering how healthy different desserts were, we learned about nutrition and RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) and how many shop-bought meals and puddings have lots of sugars and fats included that we wouldn't necessarily include if we were to make these at home. We looked at how homemade fruit-based desserts can often provide a healthier option and discussed when different British fruits were in season, comparing this to the sorts of fruit desserts traditionally eaten at that time of year.

After all that learning, we moved onto the MESSY part... quite literally! Eton Mess is a British favourite when it comes to Summer desserts so we all were more than keen to roll our sleeves up and give making this pudding a go! As strawberries are typically Summer fruits, it came as no surprise to the children when they learned that the strawberries in the shop were in short supply and those that were available were not as high of a quality as one would want when making an Eton Mess. Luckily there were other delicious fruits readily available in the shops and so, instead of strawberries, we used raspberries and pomegranate in our desserts.

The children certainly enjoyed making them and I'm sure they will enjoy eating them tonight after their tea... if the desserts even made it as far as home that is!
