As part of our DT topic on shelters, we have been investigating techniques for making strong, stable structures using a variety of materials. We discovered that the use of triangles helps to make a structure rigid. We experimented with different materials to build a framework, including art straws and wood, joining them using glue, pipe cleaners and cardboard triangles. We also looked at ways to strengthen materials which might be quite flimsy. We discovered that folding paper really enhances its strength (then noticed how this idea is used to create corrugated cardboard). We also realised that this technique was used to strengthen the tin sheets used in constructing Anderson shelters, which we learnt about last week.
