Today we held Year 5’s Viking Day.

We started off by learning about how the Vikings travelled and what was so special about their Longboats. We then had a go at creating our own, decorating them with sails and shields.

We then found out about the Nordic Paganism. We learnt about the Viking’s superstitions, and the ‘Trollkors’ they carved into objects and made out of jewellery. This was to keep supernatural evil spirits away. We made our own by braiding and twisting wire and wore them around our necks.

In the afternoon, we studied Runes - the Viking alphabet! We practiced decoding Runes and also writing our own name.

We also tried to make and taste our own Viking soda bread, however the reactions were very mixed!

At the end of the day we learnt how to set up a device used to help create Vikings braid. Instructions will be handed out tomorrow if anyone wants to try and create a Viking braid at home.
